Bakersfield is a Franklin County town of about 1,270 people in the county's southeast corner, bordering Lamoille County. Vermont Route 108 runs through the village center between Enosburg Falls to the north and Jeffersonville to the south, and Vermont Route 36 leads west from the village to St. Albans. Once known as an academy town, Bakersfield was home to Brigham Academy, whose alumni include Warren Austin, the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Children attend Bakersfield School (PreK-8). Current Bakersfield listings appear at the bottom of this page, and our Bakersfield market report shows recent sales and prices.
Bakersfield takes its name from Joseph Baker of Massachusetts, who bought 10,000 acres here in 1791 and built mills on Baker's Pond in 1794. The town grew into an "academy town," and Brigham Academy, built in 1879, served as a high school until 1967 and closed in 1987. Its best-known graduate, Warren Austin, became the first U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Philanthropist Peter Bent Brigham was also from Bakersfield.
Route 108 runs north to Enosburg Falls and south to Jeffersonville, and Route 36 heads west to St. Albans, the county seat.
Bakersfield School, in the Northern Mountain Valley Unified Union School District, serves pre-K through grade 8. For high school options, contact the district.
Buyers in Bakersfield find village homes, farmhouses and farmland, country homes on acreage with mountain views, and land. See what's for sale now in the listings below, and check recent sale prices in the Bakersfield market report, which updates as homes sell.
For homes near brooks or ponds, read the seller's flood disclosure and check the flood zone. For farmland or land, confirm road access and winter maintenance, septic suitability, and whether the parcel is enrolled in Current Use. For older homes, plan for a thorough inspection, including lead paint for homes built before 1978.
Vermont's property transfer tax, paid by the buyer at closing, is 0.5% on the first $200,000 of a primary residence and 1.47% above that; 3.62% for a second home suitable for year-round use; 1.47% for land; and a VHFA-financed primary residence is exempt on the first $250,000. Estimate your costs with our Vermont Home Cost Calculator, and see our Vermont home inspection guide.
