Living in Newark

Newark is quiet, forested hill country, rising to an unnamed 2,362-foot summit near the Westmore line. Part of Willoughby State Forest, 7,682 acres across Newark, Sutton, and Westmore, lies in town, with the trails of Mount Hor and Mount Pisgah above Lake Willoughby a short drive away.

Newark Pond is a favorite for loons and fishing. The Nature Conservancy's Newark Pond Natural Area protects 44 acres, including a small island where common loons nest and 2,410 feet of wild shoreline, with a nature trail open to the public. The pond has smallmouth bass and yellow perch, stocked trout, and a public boat launch at its north end. Center Pond, about 79 acres, also has camps along its shore.

For skiing, mountain biking, and services, Burke is just to the south, with Burke Mountain and the Kingdom Trails network, and Lyndonville is a little farther on.
